Where Summer Grows: A Season at Reiman Gardens

Author: Emma Cawelti

Summer is one of the most exciting times to visit Reiman Gardens, with a full lineup of events that celebrate plants, people, and the science behind the beauty. Whether you’re a seasoned gardener, a casual visitor, or just looking for something fun to do with family and friends, there’s something happening all season long.

The summer begins with the always popular Plant Sale Extravaganza, May 9-10th, which is the perfect time to refresh your garden with a wide selection of plants, from perennials and vegetables to roses, trees, and hanging baskets. Many visitors make this a yearly tradition, especially since the weekend typically marks the first frost-free planting opportunity in central Iowa.

Later in May, Reiman Gardens celebrates National Public Gardens’ Day on May 13th with free admission and special programming. Visitors can explore the gardens while participating in hands-on activities, meeting scientists from Iowa State University, learning about climate change, and discovering ways to support pollinators and native plant gardening.

June continues the momentum with beloved annual events. The Rose Show on June 13th invites guests to enjoy stunning rose collections and award-winning blooms, while the Pollinator Fest on June 20th brings educational displays, interactive activities, and opportunities to learn about the vital role pollinators play in our ecosystems.

The month closes with a colorful Flower Show on June 27th, hosted by the Ames Garden Club, offering inspiration, expert insight, and creative displays for gardeners of all experience levels.

From plant shopping and seasonal shows to science experiences and pollinator celebrations, summer at Reiman Gardens is a time to slow down, explore something new, and enjoy the gardens at their very best.
